Abstract Ocean Sunsets And Full Moon Set

I’ve been sharing this year some of the photographs that have been the inspiration or original version of my art prints. This week I’m sharing my abstract art interpretation of two coastal sunsets and one coastal moon set. All three are along the Pacific Ocean coastline…one in San Diego County and two in Northern California.

The first one is based on an actual photograph of a sunset I captured from the bedroom deck of our house. Our neighborhood was built on a ridge of hills that was located next to the Carlsbad Water District retention pond (Carlsbad is a coastal community in Northern San Diego County). I mention that because the bulk of the land to support that retention pond was a wide open field that will never be developed. It afforded all of the homes along the western front of the neighborhood great ocean views. The house we raised our girls in was at the end of a cul-de-sac that was on that western edge of the development affording us a view of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean.

Using this photograph I did a digital re-creation of the scene for my Abstract Art Gallery.

Orange Ocean Sunset

The next two art prints were created from memory, again using abstract art as the focus of the creation. The two depictions came from memory of coastal scenes in Northern California that really stuck with me. The first one is a sunset with a typical evening marine layer of clouds coming in just before the sun actually set. The low clouds would part sporadically and allow the setting sun to shine through.

Blue Abstract Sunset

The next one was a full moon setting as a marine layer started rolling in. The low clouds would part sporadically and allow the setting moon to shine through very similar to the setting sun creation above.

Thoughts? As I have said before, everyone reacts to visual art techniques and looks differently, so I am not in the least offended by opinions.

Live Your Life In The Present

This is a daily reminder to myself. Live your life in the present moment. Sounds easy enough, but how often do we find our minds dwelling on the past? The “what ifs” of life. If only I had done this or said that. Dwelling on the past robs you of the present moment. The past can’t be changed. We can learn from it, but it’s the past. It’s over and done.

Or how often do our minds start dwelling and worrying about the future? What if “this happens”? How will I handle it? What will I do?

In both cases, you have just ignored “the present”.  The past is old news and can’t be changed. The future hasn’t happened and all of the worry in the world can’t change it.

As I said, I remind myself of this daily to embrace what is happening at the present moment and to not let it slip by without embracing and enjoying it. If the present moment is that painful, I have faith that it will become “the past” before it consumes me.

The photograph is a sunset over the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, California near where we use to live.

Abstract Sunsets

In keeping with the theme from last weeks post, this week I’m featuring some more abstract prints. All four of these prints have a common theme…..foggy coastal sunsets!! You’re looking at these prints thinking….really?….these are sunsets?

It began on a trip my wife and I took up the coast of California and Oregon. It was in the fall and as seasonal temperatures change along the coastline, it’s not unusual to have fog role in about the same time as the sun sets. What was really interesting to me was the way the colors changed as the sun would come and go through the fog as it settled on the horizon.  You go from a very strong gray to small burst of light creating moments of unique colors through the fog onto the beach. Some of the moments were very subtle and some were muted bright colors. I took a number of shots every evening to have a point of reference in what I wanted to create in the way of different abstract prints. Using digital drawing and painting I created these four prints.

Carlsbad, California – Coastal Sunset

Carlsbad, California is located in North San Diego County – north of the city of San Diego proper.  It sits along the coastline and the village center is just blocks from the beach. This particular setting is just south of the village center where there is a walkway along the coast just above the beach (notice the fence as it lines the walkway above the beach). To get down to the beach there are long stairs scattered periodically for access. I have a number of art prints done in various styles from this setting. What I wanted to feature today was this particular print I did using more subtle earth tones instead of bright vibrant colors. It creates a different visual experience and supports a more relaxed mood with the setting sun. I used the same technique I talked about last week (impasto) to create the thick bold brush strokes.
