Tulip Town

Tulip Town is a tulip farm located in the Skagit Valley just west of Mt. Vernon, Washington (north of Seattle). You can visit their site (here). Skagit Valley is a fertile farming valley that typically has field upon field in full bloom with tulips and daffodils this time of year. Last winter was an especially tough winter for this farming valley. The region experienced an exceptionally wet winter of rain that has continued into the spring. Many fields have been flooded and the spring floral blooms aren’t as robust as normal. Having said that, it is still beautiful with many spring tulips in bloom.

A couple of weeks ago in the middle of numerous days of rain, we had a warm sunny day and my wife and I decided to take advantage of the sunshine by visiting Tulip Town. We weren’t disappointed with the beauty of fields of tulips in full bloom and many other fields just starting to bloom. In all candor with or without the blooms, the valley is beautiful all by itself. I have attached ten captures from our time there. Enjoy!!

Lounge In The Back Yard – Featured Art Print

The 1st of May has arrived. May has always been one of my favorite months and when I think of May, the attached picture is what I think of. I can just picture myself reading a book sipping an ice tea on a warm spring day in a yard like this….I came across this scene during the month of May a few years back on Martha’s Vineyard just off the coast in Massachusetts. Enjoy!!

The Arbor – Featured Art Print

I wanted to keep with a Spring theme this time of year, so I decided to feature an art print I created a few years back called “The Arbor”. I used an abstract watercolor technique creating this scene. This technique uses abstract shapes and subdued color tones creating a clean modern look. This particular wall art print depicts a sidewalk along the side of a picket fence stretching back to where it ends under an arbor. It depicts a scene from Martha’s Vineyard in the springtime. Martha’s Vineyard is an island off the coast of Massachusetts along the eastern seaboard. It is well-known for traditional New England architecture. Thoughts?

The Sun in the Trees – Excerpts from a Photo Shoot

I’m attaching some shots I took a couple of weeks ago when I was out on a photo shoot. That particular outing was a 2 hour hike into the desert for saguaro cactus blooms. I was able to get some shots, but had more fun as I was about two blocks away from our house on the way back. Coming into our neighborhood is a common area that is planted with desert trees, shrubs and plants. The trees were in full spring bloom with yellow flowers and as I was walking on the sidewalk under them, I looked up and caught the sun shining thru the leaves and thought…”how cool”. Having grown up shooting film, I still hesitate taking sunlight shots with digital as not something you do readily with film. With all of this going through my head and wanting to take some shots to play with, let’s just say I decided the best angle would be laying on the sidewalk on my back. Simple enough with no one around to wonder what the heck you are doing….wrong….let’s just say a morning “power walker” came around the corner on that same sidewalk. Imagine her surprise to find a 60 yr man with camera and back pack stretched out blocking her route. Unfortunately for her, it took me a few minutes to realize I was being watched. Feeling like an idiot and being the smart ass I am, I said…”This must look really weird.” Her reply was a “Yes, but the good news for you is I appreciate good photography and get what you’re doing!”

The last one… I played with the contrast and darkened the shot for comparison sakes. Not sure what if anything I will do with the shots, but wanted to share them and the story. Thoughts?

Cactus Blooms – Excerpts From a Photo Shoot

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed driving into our community that the cactus planted in the common areas were starting to bloom. We are literally just a couple of blocks from open desert, so I thought it’s hiking time for a photo shoot to see what I can find. I have attached four of the shots from that expedition of the cactus I found in bloom. The color is incredible!

On Cactus Bloom 3 – notice the faint hint of a cobweb between two of the plants and then again in the lower left hand corner.

I’ll share some of my other finds from that hike in a later post. Thanks!

Cherry Blossoms University of Washington

I wanted to share a series of pictures of the cherry blossoms on the University of Washington Campus in Seattle. These were taken a couple of weeks ago on the same trip where I did a photo shoot of covered bridges in Oregon (note prior post). We were just ahead of the peak, but thought these were worth sharing. I haven’t done any editing or cropping, so these are still raw, but spring is in the air! Enjoy!!
