Welcome 2022

I hope everyone has had a warm and loving holiday season. I hope the year past was full of love from friends and family. I take this time of year to reflect on the past and to look forward with the new year upon us. I reflect on those moments that inspired my heart and yes those moments that caused pain. What can I learn from that pain and how to turn it into one of those inspiring moments. To celebrate the beginning of 2022, I have attached three art prints of flowers with a verse that says so much to me.

Love Is Patient

As we head into the Christmas week I thought I would feature three art prints that have one of my favorites from 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8, known as Love Is Patient. It fits so well on these three art prints.

The first one supports this time of year. The art print is a photographic capture of a Christmas snow in the Seattle area.

The second one is a watercolor art print depicting a mountain lake near Whistler, British Columbia.

The third art print is an abstract watercolor depicting a sunset over the Pacific Ocean as a marine layer comes ashore.

Tis The Season -2021

The beginning of December is typically when our Camellia tree and bushes start their winter bloom here in Los Angeles. It also marks the beginning of the Christmas season, so I thought it appropriate to share three camellia captures with words for the holiday season!!

Love Conquers All….

Love conquers all is a saying I am guilty of using quite a bit. It says so much and has come out of my mouth in many tough interpersonal situations. If you would ask my girls what is Dad infamous for always saying, they would come back with “Take the high road…..love conquers all.” I firmly believe if you have love at the core of what you are doing or saying, it does ultimately conquer all obstacles. It came full circle to me with one of my daughters recently when we were having a discussion about a situation I was dealing with and out of her mouth came: “Take the high road, love conquers all! You used that expression over and over again with us girls in these types of situations and that would be my recommendation to you in this case”.

I took her advice in that particular situation and it got me to thinking about creating some art prints capturing the essence of that expression. I ended up using three of my art prints with that saying as an overlay.

The first one is a color photograph of a peaceful and serene pond in Butchart Gardens located just outside of Victoria, British Columbia.

In the second one I used a soft watercolor of Hidden Lake located just outside of Whistler, British Columbia, again going for the peaceful and serene look.

With the third one I wanted to use something that included people, especially multiple people or a crowd of people. Keeping with a “soft look”, I chose a watercolor I created of a crowd of people inspired by a scene I saw in Seattle, Washington ahead of a major sports event.

Arrows Above Us

My post this week is totally different than anything I have done. I want to share a post that my daughter did on her blog called Arrows Above Us. Let me back up and share the background of her post. She started a motivational blog not too long ago called “The Picture of Faith“. It’s an inspirational blog written from her heart.

I have mentioned before that we have three daughters, all married. We raised our girls in San Diego and ironically all three live elsewhere. Our oldest and youngest live in the Seattle area and our middle daughter lives here in the Los Angeles area. Our grandchildren are here in Los Angeles, thus why we live here.

Our oldest daughter got married in her late 20’s and they are about to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. This Christmas, they shared with us that they were finally pregnant. There couldn’t have been a happier Christmas present for all of us. Her blog post covers her subsequent recent miscarriage. I share this only because miscarriages impact many, many people and are rarely talked about or shared. (Example: we suffered a similar situation after our second child and it devastated us as we had problems getting pregnant period. We did go on to have our third daughter a few years after that.) Miscarriages are unfortunately far more common than people talk about and the grieving sometimes is done alone. It’s real, but not often shared or appreciated.

I share her story as an inspirational way to approach such grief and encourage so many others that this type of situation should not be buried, but openly dealt with as appropriate to let others know….they are not alone. Please click on the link below to go to that particular post on her blog:

The Light Of Life

Lighthouses are a great symbol of guidance to safety. I’ve attached two art prints I have created of lighthouses using entirely different approaches. On both, I added the same verse which I thought fit perfectly with a lighthouse. The verse refers to the “Light of Life”, which I think of as Love, Hope, Peace and Joy. We all seek that and find comfort in these feelings. With the Christmas Season upon us, especially this year, we definitely could use as much Love as we can muster for each other and the Hope that we will conquer this pandemic sooner rather than later. Peace and Joy we all seek in our everyday lives on a daily basis. All of this is within our ability as individuals and is one of the few things we can actually control on a daily basis.

This first print, I created the lighthouse in a very abstract matter.

The second print, I created using ink drawing to outline the lighthouse structure and then filled in the color with a watercolor/airbrush technique.

May your holiday season be filled with Love, Hope, Peace and Joy!

Light of Love

I just wanted to post a reminder that now more than ever we need to approach the issues of the day with as much love in our hearts as we can muster. People are hurting and it’s up to all of us to reach out with all of the love and compassion we can muster. It may not always be received well, but we can’t quit trying.

Father And Son Walk The Beach

In keeping with the theme over the last few weeks from my posts (peace and tranquility), I’ve added an additional element this week…human interaction. This type of human interaction is rooted in love and trust. The art print depicts a father and son walking on an otherwise empty beach with the beauty of the ocean in front of them. What I see is a bonding moment between a parent and their child. The conversation can be intimate and personal as they share the beach with no one else.

In creating this scene, the focal point is the two people in the lower bottom right. Typically your focal point is more centered, but I wanted the the ocean and beach to set a mood or tone for the overall look. To create the focal point I used black as a stark contrast to the rest of the scene. In the foreground as a row of black pulling the eye down. I envisioned this as the top of bluff overlooking the setting. Pulling your eye down you can’t help but go over to the right and see what I am calling the father and son.

Since this is an abstract work, to heighten the awareness of the ocean, I added sailboats in a slightly darker shade of blue so as not to become the focal point, but to solidify the setting. I envisioned a walk on the beach just after sundown, with light coming from a break in the approaching clouds (potentially fog or a marine layer rolling ashore).

The Inspirational Flamingo Family

This week I’m featuring a series of art prints I created that were inspired by a project I took on for a kids room. The series is five prints of flamingos done in an abstract style. On each of the prints I added a word of inspiration. The series has a whimsical look to brighten the day and words of inspiration to guide our way.

I’m starting with “Family”. Family represents many things to each of us. It could mean your immediate biological family or an extended family or a work family or even the family of man. We are in this together as family from our individual households to the planet as a whole.

The next one is “Faith”. We have faith that we will get through this together as family.

Next is “Hope” which springs from faith. We have hope in the best outcome or hope in a better future than the present situation.

Next in line is “Peace”. Our faith and hope lead us to a feeling of peace. Live each moment “in the moment”. There is nothing but the current moment in our lives. The past is just that and the future has not happened.

Stay focused on the present moment and enjoy our next message “Love”. Love springs eternal and connects us to each other. Love celebrates the present moment and enriches our lives. Love for ourselves and love for each other.
