Seattle Spring 2021

(As a follow up to last weeks post Tombstone, Arizona in Sepia, I asked for feedback on which sepia print was favored to help me narrow down to one or two. Ironically 1, 3 &4 got identical likes. Thanks!)

My wife and I just got back from a couple of weeks in Seattle. Two of our daughters and their husbands live there and this trip was great as we were able to spend time with all of them. One of the things I enjoy doing when we are up there is walking their dogs as needed. On one of my walks I was blown away by all of the spring blooms. On this particular walk the area is well established and the trees and bushes are very mature and large. I wanted to share some of the blooms I came across.

And to complete the captures, I had to share the following due to the shear size and look of this tree trunk…incredible.

The Rock, Lighthouse and a Rose in Black and White

For those of you that have been following me, this post won’t be a surprise. I periodically post different captures from my black and white photography gallery with the reasons I think they stand out more using the black and white motif.

We’ll start with “The Rock”. I love this shot and showing it this way allows the detail of the rock itself to be highlighted.  The scene is unique unto itself with this huge rock structure, but it also emphasizes the white surf of the waves coming ashore.

Next is “Admiralty Head Lighthouse 2” which is located north of Seattle, Washington. By showing this in black and white, the architectural details stand out as the center of focus. The subtle lines along the lower level of the first and second floor become more obvious along with the same type of lines along the top of the tower and second floor. The window framing actually pops because it contrasts with the white stucco of the building itself, as does the roof and top of the lighthouse itself.

“The Unfolding Of Petals” is a perfect example of detail that “pops” out with the absence of color. The color photograph of this rose is stunning and no getting away from the brilliance of the color. Having said that,  I did this in black and white because the amount of detail that pops with the petals is intense,  from the actual shaping of the petals to the veining that shows on each petal.

Love Each Other

A simple message with a very powerful outcome. I think what we have lost sight of in today’s world is that not two of us have the same opinion on everything. To me, that’s what makes humankind so unique and powerful. We are not all of the same race, gender, nationality, religion, political party, family upbringing, experiences growing up, etc…..I could go on and on. We try to categorize people by these labels and to me that misses the mark. Pick any label and some of us fit into it, but do those same people fit into other categories together…not necessarily. How do we as individuals grow if we aren’t willing to listen and learn from each other?

So to me, this passage from the bible as the last commandment from Jesus to His disciples wasn’t about just the disciples loving each other, but the family of man. It doesn’t mean we have to like each other or even agree with each other on every issue, but at our core is the desire to love and be loved.

Abstract Camellia

It was mid February last year when I posted a photoshoot I did of our two camellia trees and two camellia bushes in full bloom. I just finished the attached art prints inspired from that shoot.

I created these prints using an abstract watercolor technique to replicate the brilliant colors of the blooms and clean ink lines to the define the petals, leaving a vibrant contemporary look.

Camellia Blooms In Pastel

Last winter, I shared a number of photographic captures of camellia blooms from our trees and bushes.  Each bush or tree is a different variety giving us a mix of colors and types. Doing some yard work this week, I saw that buds were forming on the camellias in preparation for this winters bloom. Today I wanted to share a couple of art prints I created using that photo shoot as an inspiration and template for some digital art.

I have attached two prints I created using a pastel chalk technique. To create a little more definition of the petals on the bloom, I used a very thin brush stroke. The first one is a pink bloom and the second one a red bloom and bud.

Love And Gratitude – Featured Art Print

Love And Gratitude is an inspirational art print I created using inspirational thoughts as an overlay on an original art print of mine titled: Candy Cane Rose Bud. I created this wall art print using a subtle watercolor painting technique of a rose bud just opening up. This technique uses subtle brush strokes and soft colors creating a warm look.

Lounge In The Back Yard – Featured Art Print

The 1st of May has arrived. May has always been one of my favorite months and when I think of May, the attached picture is what I think of. I can just picture myself reading a book sipping an ice tea on a warm spring day in a yard like this….I came across this scene during the month of May a few years back on Martha’s Vineyard just off the coast in Massachusetts. Enjoy!!

Southern California Flower Garden – Excerpts From a Photo Shoot

I wanted to share a photo shoot I did last weekend while we were in Los Angeles at our daughter and son-in-law’s house. They have a lot of mature plants around their house and I usually do a quick photo shoot whenever we visit because something is always in bloom. As usual I wasn’t disappointed. I wanted to share the first capture just to give you an idea how thick and mature their gardens are. This shot was actually taken from a window looking out into what looks like a dense jungle. Just through those bushes is a green carpet of lawn, but from this viewpoint you just see bushes and a few stray lilies.

This next capture is the same lily from the first photo, but from the yard looking into the “undergrowth”. I loved the subtle lighting this single plant was getting.

Southern California Flower Garden Two

I took a stroll around the house and found the rest….

Single Rose Bloom In Gothic – Featured Art Print

I wanted to display another new addition to my Floral/Still Life Gallery that also came from the Arizona Territorial Rose Garden Photo Shoot I posted about in November from Prescott, Arizona. With this print I created the single rose bud using a gothic oil technique that creates an old world look with the earthen color tones. The look is totally different than the watercolor rose I posted last week, but each brings its own unique look between the two totally different techniques.  Thoughts?
