Floral Color for 2023

I thought I’d start the New Year with a simple, but beautiful post featuring bright colorful floral blooms.

I’m starting with two orchid blooms.

Then on to Camellia blooms…

Watercolor Dahlia Macros

Last month I shared my photo shoot of large Dahlia Blooms. Using the macro captures from that shoot, I applied a soft watercolor technique recreating them into paintings. The blooms are still impressive, but with a softer look.

Dahlia Blooms – Close Up and Macro

My wife, our oldest daughter and myself did a day trip over to Whidbey Island last week (Whidbey is just “off shore” in the Puget Sound north of downtown Seattle, but literally just west of where we live in the northern suburbs of Seattle). It doesn’t matter where we go, I always have my camera ready as you never know what you will see that hits you as a photo opportunity. One of those opportunities occurred right after lunch and just before we were going to catch the ferry back to the mainland. We had stopped at a nice outdoor restaurant for lunch and next door to it was a massive nursery with tons of flowers and plants. It caught my wife and daughters eye, so after lunch we ventured over to check it out. As the three of us ventured around the nursery, we came across some stunning Dahlia plants with very (and I mean at least 12 inches/30.48 centimeters) large blooms. The photographer in me immediately went to work on capturing the largest blooms, framing those and then taking another shot as a macro close-up. I have attached eight captures of four different blooms.

Brightly Colored Orchids

This week, I’m switching things up a bit to showcase three art prints of brightly colored orchids. I used a fauvism technique which creates somewhat abstract shapes with very bright colors. For anyone that has been following my work over the years, you have seen this technique used by me on a variety of subject matters.

The first one is a red orchid stem showcasing a number of the blooms.

The final one showcases a stem of yellow orchid blooms. I love the blooms as they last for some time and add a splash of color to any setting!

Spring Flowers

I thought I would celebrate spring blooms this week, so I have attached four art prints I created using a watercolor technique. I included one agapanthus and three rose blooms. The agapanthus are blooming here in Southern California and the roses I have lining our front walkway are in full bloom!! Enjoy!!

Bougainvillea – Bold and Subtle in Watercolor

Last summer I shared a couple of captures I took of our Bougainvillea blooms from our backyard. It took me until November to take those shots and create watercolor art prints of them. I also took them into two different directions, dark & bold and light & subtle. The original shots were taken to highlight the back lighting of the “colored bracts” surrounding the actual flower. That’s the technical and actual description, but most of us see the bracts as petals creating the bloom. The actual flower is a very small insignificant light colored center piece in the center of the bracts. Ok, so much for our botanical class lesson and let’s move on to what I did with them.

I wanted to present the look in a watercolor format as that lends itself to a soft warm presentation. What also caught me eye was the subtle difference in lighting and color saturation between the two. I decided to accent those differences which resulted in the attached art prints! I think the name I gave each says it all in what I saw as differences between the two.

Bold Orchids

I have attached two newer prints I created using orchids as a subject matter. In the case of these two, I used an impasto technique to create two strong visual experiences. This technique uses large and bold brush strokes creating a very distinctive visual texture. Add bold colors and the prints definitely stand out.

A good friend of ours has a green thumb with orchids and I used two of her plants as inspiration for these prints. I loved the deep purple of the one plant which inspired the first print.

Back Lit Orchids

I also like the look of back lighting these types of flowers (the blooms are thin enough to create a glow when back lit) and tried to replicate that look with these red orchids.

Dainty Red Series – Featured Art Prints Part Two

As a follow-up to last weeks post “Dainty Red Series – Part One” , I wanted to show where that series of prints took me next.

For my “Inspiration Gallery”, I use existing prints I have created and marry them with words of inspiration, motivation, prayers or Bible verses. Actually it truly is the other way around, I usually come up with the verbiage first and then figure out a photograph or print that best highlights the words. I featured the first print during the Easter Season last spring. I was working with this Bible verse and this print come into view as perfect for a very direct simple message.

With this message in mind, I wanted the same simplistic look with just enough spacing to keep the message from getting lost, thus the double stem.

Rest In His Presence

Being on a roll as they say, this verbiage seemed perfect to use the single stem again. All three were created one right after the other as the verses I was working with fit perfectly with these simple prints.

Dainty Red Series – Featured Art Prints – Part One

The series I am featuring today was originated by a request from one of my clients. They wanted a series of art prints for a room they were working on. The request was for “something” using the color red, floral in subject matter and simplistic in look. I would like to say I immediately envisioned exactly what that would be, but in all candor I played with a number of designs before I arrived at what ultimately became these prints. I settled on small red flower blooms on stems. The series included bouquets and singular stems. I used two different techniques to create these prints. The first technique created an abstract look that took on sharp clean lines defining the blooms and the stems. When that was finished, I then used a very subtle watercolor technique to soften the look just a bit creating the final result.

The watercolor technique creates a softening on the petals and in the background, giving the white background a hint of texture.

This particular print “Dainty Red Double Stem” has become the most popular print in my entire gallery.  For me it complimented the single stem and played into the bouquets that follow.

Soft Rose Bloom In Red And Purple   

Soft Rose Bloom In Red And Purple is a wall art print I created using a soft watercolor technique. This technique creates defined lines that compliment a soft watercolor look. This print was just added to my Floral/Still life Gallery and was inspired by my photo shoot of rose blooms in the Arizona Territorial Rose Garden located on the grounds of the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, Arizona.
