Bedrock in Fauvism – Featured Art Prints

This is a follow-up to a post I did in October of 2015 (The Flintstones Town of Bedrock). I shared excerpts from a photo shoot I had done of a tourist attraction south of the Grand Canyon which is a recreation of the town of Bedrock made famous by the Flintstones cartoon characters. That post starts with this quote: “This post is a fun one for me….I haven’t a clue what I will ever do with any of these shots, but I had a great time taking them.”

I truly didn’t think I would do anything with those shots, but middle of last year I came across them again and decided I would see what they would look like presented in a more abstract manner by using the fauvism technique I work with on other prints. The final result is the five art prints I have attached.

I like the bright surreal colors of this style along with the abstract interpretation of the subject matter. Considering the surreal look of the structures, it all seemed to come together as an appropriate marriage. Thoughts?

The Flintstones Town of Bedrock – Excerpts From a Photo Shoot

This post is a fun one for me….I haven’t a clue what I will ever do with any of these shots, but I had a great time taking them.

Let me back up to the first of August. If you follow my blog, that time frame correlates with all of my Grand Canyon photographs. As it turns out, along the way to the Grand Canyon is this “tourist” attraction of the Flintstones town of Bedrock. The cartoon characters span multi generations and I used to laugh at the antics of Fred and Barney as so many did. Yet, nowhere in my mind did I envision a re-creation of the town of Bedrock located in the middle of the desert along the way to the Grand Canyon. Go figure!

The place looked so cheesy and you couldn’t actually see the town behind the gift shop from the road, so we weren’t sure what we would find. We normally don’t waste time, money or effort on such things, but my wife, daughter, son-in-law and myself thought it would be a “kick” to just check it out as it was only $5.00. I knew it would be a fun photo shoot, so we paid our money and went to see the town of “Bedrock”. Again, go figure someone would build cement blown and brightly colored buildings to resemble the prehistoric town of bedrock. It was spread out over quite a few acres and had numerous buildings to wander through.

Attached are 11 shots I took that day. I shoot in RAW format to capture extreme detail, so I can play with the contrast, sharpness, lighting etc., later. I wanted to give the shots a little edgy look….

The first capture is a volcano with a Pterodactyl flying near the top.

The second shot is the Bedrock Barber Shop and Beauty Salon with the volcano in the background.

What would Bedrock be without some of the characters hanging around. The third picture is Wilma in front of her and Fred’s house.

This fourth shot shows Betty waving to (?????) in front of her and Barney’s house. (I really never did figure out just who she was waving to…)

The fifth shot shows the living room inside one of the homes (can’t remember which one).

Number six is inside one of the homes again. Please note this is all blown concrete, so someone went to a lot of trouble to create these scenes.

Number seven is the schoolhouse in town. Love the turnip shape of the building.

Eight is the Post Office with someone looking out of the second story window.

Nine is the Grocery Store…gotta love the bird roasting on the spit to the right side of the building.

Ten is the center of nightlife for Bedrock. What community would be complete without a nightclub?

Eleven finishes the tour with a gas station, although car power was pedal power of Fred’s feet…..

…thoughts?
