When you go with a monochrome presentation of a picture, you are presenting a scene, structure or object in tones of a singular color. I use black and white presentations usually to create a mood. In a sepia tone presentation it usually creates a “vintage” look since we associate that color tone to old-fashioned pictures. To illustrate this, I chose three shots of a subject that I have done in black and white and sepia tone.
The first picture is of Cape Blanco Lighthouse along the Oregon coastline.
The second capture is of an adobe located on the grounds of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
And the third shot is of a barn nestled in a valley in Iowa.

I love the sepia tone. As you say it creates a vintage look and I like that, especially for the old barn. Black and white can be very effective especially in the case of the lighthouse.

It’s interesting to play with black and white, and sepia. I like the b & w better for the lighthouse and the barn. The sepia looks good on the cabin.

First of all, I love light houses! As far as black & white vs. sepia, I do like the old fashioned quality of sepia. I guess it depends on the image topic and what kind of appeal one wants.
Each approach creates a slightly different visual and for sepia specifically…subject matter does make a difference in my opinion. I appreciate the feedback and for you taking the time to stop by!! Have a great rest of the week!!

The sepia does give the photos a more “old-timey” feel. I did a lot of black-and-white photography ‘way back in the day, but I still like the warmer sepia tones better unless the subject really needs black and white. 🙂
