I created this art print using a colored pencil and chalk technique. This technique uses strong drawing lines with softer chalk strokes filling in. The colors are in pastels, giving it a soft modern look.
The setting is a grove of palm trees in a local park near our home here in Arizona. It reminds me of a similar palm grove I came across on the big Island of Hawaii along the shoreline. I love the look of a group of palm trees creating a small “forest”. The fronds create a shaded canopy from the hot day sun and invite you into the palms to relax and enjoy the afternoon.
I have only used this particular technique on a few of my art prints and welcome any feedback. Thoughts?

I really love it, Kirt. It’s a little sad to me right now though, as I think of the battering the beautiful palms have taken from H. Irma. But looking at your print I know nature will restore herself and the vegetation will regrow. Kind of like us when we go through our personal storms.
Sending blessings..have a GREAT week 😊
Thanks for the blessings Lorrie and the feedback. I set the post up this weekend and thought about Irma as the scene unfolded yesterday on The Weather Chanel…ironically the palm trees for all the whipping they were going through survived more intact than the other trees and or the buildings for that matter. Resilience as you said with each of us as we go through our own personal storms. Well said!! Blessings back at you and a great week for you also!!
😊 I love palm trees so much, K irt. And you are correct…their roots go straight down and the ‘bend’ in the wind (although I saw some pics of them snapping!) A friend sent me a photo of a huge tree that was uprooted right behind my condo! Phew…
There is a whole lot of damage throughout Florida but I am so thankful that it was not as severe as they originally predicted.
Have a great week 💜
I agree on the severity aspect….not good as it is, but it could have been so much worse.
Beautiful palm grove, Kirt–
Thank you very much Jet!!
I really like this one Kirt and your technique are great 🙂
Thank you very much Irene!! I appreciate the feedback and appreciate you stopping by!!
Nice image Kirt. It makes me think of beaches and how much I want to visit one! 🙂
Ironic that this grove is in the desert, but it truly reminded me of another grove in Hawaii right by the ocean….part of the pastel approach speaks beachy to me. Thanks for stopping by Brad and thanks for the feedback!!
My pleasure Kirt. It’s always nice taking a virtual tour or holiday. 🙂
Wow, what a beautiful image! I love this technique – it’s so soft-looking, yet somehow the detail shines through. I’m fascinated by your colour choices – do you really “see” those colours in the grove of trees, or do you make a deliberate choice to colour-shift and/or emphasize the undertones in a work like this?
I don’t actually “see” those colors in the grove, but that said when I decided to do this technique I went into it with pastel sides in mind just to do something different and to see what would look like. I have tried this same approach on other subjects and not been at all happy…so a lot of trial and error. Thanks for asking and thanks for stopping by.
This is absolutely brilliant! You are very talented!
I truly appreciate the feedback….it’s a technique I wasn’t 100 sure about! Thanks for stopping by Mary.
I adore this one Kirt! I love the colors, and the effects work perfectly to sort of set the trees apart from bland reality. It puts me in mind of what I call “60s mod”… bringing girlhood dreams of go-go boots, paisley prints, and big plastic earrings. Thanks for bringing a smile at the end of a difficult workday. Hugs on the wing!
My pleasure….kind of a different look that I wasn’t real sure about….
I like this a lot Kirt. It’s a wonderful look for this image. Nicely done.
Thank you very much Dan!! I appreciate you stopping by!!
I like this softer look Kirt. It really gives the effect of the trees as a whole. How do you make the decision as to what technique to use? Has that revolved with experience?
Good question Sue. I am always experimenting with different techniques and do a lot of trial and error. With this technique I tried a variety of subjects to find a fit….wasn’t sure about it and then did these palms….I liked it, but still wasn’t sure so silently slid it into my gallery. Trying to decide what to feature this week it jumped out at me, so decided to feature it for feedback. With my work I usually take my most recent photo shoot and pick what I think are the best shots and start playing with them trying different techniques. Often I’ll do a technique where I just know it would look great on some prior shot….probably more than you wanted to know 😎😎!!
Not more than I wanted to know. I find it intriguing. Perhaps it is a bit like writing and trying to decide what style to present a subject in. Knowing what has worked well with audiences in the past and then a bit of trial and error.
Very similar approach….not a perfect science for sure!!
I like the technique you’ve used here, Kirt! It’s gentler somehow. The bright colors are lovely!
Thank you for the feedback Christy….a technique I haven’t used a lot!!
I like your post 😊.
Thank you very much!!! Much appreciated!!
Great work, Kirt! Sometimes the best art is inspired by our surrounding 🙂
For me that is truly most of the time!! Thanks for stopping by Indah!!
So soft and breezy!! It looks just the right amount of sunny, blended with a cool breeze! And the colors are so fun!
Thank you very much!! I appreciate the feedback and for stopping by…wasn’t sure when I started it how the pastel colors would look.
Well done – the colors and image are uplifting and cheerful. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words…..much appreciated!!
Kirt, this looks very pretty and captivated my eyes with glints of hot colors and softened pastels. You outdid yourself! 🏆
I was only able to do September posts today. Summers at an auto parts warehouse are grueling! Thank you, Kirt for stopping by many of my posts. I especially liked your seeing the brewery opening with my brother Randy. Parties are rare for me, few and far between. I felt like I had traveled to a beautiful setting on the edge of a beach party.
I understand about trying to catch up….no worries and I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment! I appreciate the feedback!! Have a great week!
