South Fork Snoqualmie River Hiking – Excerpts from a Photo Shoot

As mentioned a few posts ago, my wife and I headed up to Seattle to visit our youngest daughter and her fiancé. I had talked about the real purpose of the trip, which was to pick out a wedding dress with all of the “yes to the dress” hoopla that entails for the ladies. During their big outing, I thought it would be a great opportunity for the guys to go hiking, which I love to do…especially in in the Pacific Northwest. Over the course of the next few posts, I want to share what I think are some of my best shots from a couple of different hikes.

Before I get into the hiking photos, I do need to share one of the true highlights of that trip. After the ladies had done a day of wedding dress shopping, my daughter had narrowed it down to one particular dress. She didn’t want to give her final “yes” until she had shown it to her dad. So, the day before we came back to Phoenix, her and my wife took me to the bridal shop and had me sit down while she tried it on. When she came out in her dress, tears pooled up in my eyes. In front of me stood our youngest daughter representing our last wedding from our three girls. Needless to say, I was blown away. The dress was made for her (as were the others for her respective sisters). Stunning doesn’t even begin to describe it…..it was one of those life moments that will stick with me forever.  I am a very blessed man.

Thanks for letting me share that, now some hiking shots. These three shots come from a hike near North Bend, Washington, in the Cascade Mountain Range. The hike itself was along the South Fork Snoqualmie River (say that one real fast). All three photos are taken from the same spot, just changing composition and zoom slightly. I would like your feedback on which of the three you like the best and why.

All three shots are fabulous. I guess if i had to pick, it would be the first one as I like the detail at the front of the photo with the falls more in the background. I LOVE your story of seeing your daughter in her wedding dress. You are indeed a lucky man as they are lucky girls! Thanks for sharing that.

Kirt the photos are fabulous however I am afraid your story overshadows them. The description of seeing your daughter in her wedding dress gave me goosebumps. Thank you for sharing that with your readers.

I agree with Sue. Thanks for sharing your heart with us. I was hoping to see a photo of your daughter and that dress. 🙂 I like all 3 with a slight preference for the second one as the focus seems to be more about the falls & the detail in the rock above is wonderful. I remember some beautiful waterfalls in the Cascades.

Thanks Brad…..I would of loved to have posted the picture of her in her dress, but wouldn’t so as not to spoil it for her fiancé! Thanks for the input on the pictures!!

The good news for us, Brad is that we have a few shots with my wife and I holding “Yes to the Dress” signs with her in the dress….also a few of her by herself….I’m glad we captured the moment even if we can’t share them! Thanks for stopping by!!

Before I answer your question, Kirt, let me thank you for another memory. I hiked along that river numerous times in the late 70s but I didn’t get the photos when I split with the photographer. I think, of all the areas we hiked, I like that are the best for day hikes and simple overnight camping. I like the first photo the best. I think it gives the best perspective of the waterfall (and I really like how its split by the rocks).

Thanks for the feedback, Dan…it was an easy day hike, which we were looking for as we also had our daughter and her fiance’s dog hiking with our group…lets just say the dog is short legged and a bit over weight….we wore him out 🙂

Oh, it’s so hard to decide!! I love mountain streams, I can feel the shock of the cold water now!
But, I’m leaning twards the middle one. It shows off the drama of the waterfall, and also the nearer shallows.
But I have to know, did you photograph your daughter in her dress?

It’s interesting how big a change a small alteration in vantage point can make in the composition. But all are lovely. I can just hear the water and imagine the other sounds. Relaxing. Mega hugs

I really enjoyed this post, Kirt, as always. Your wedding dress story is very sweet and heartfelt. Lovely that you embrace the lives of your daughters and love each one so deeply. Your Cascade hike photos are gorgeous, I like each one. Since you asked, my favorite is the middle one because while offering an overview, it brings us in close enough to see the details. I especially like seeing the rich aqua colors in the deeper water, and the cracks on the facet of the lefthand boulder in the water. Also, you captured movement so well.

Thanks for the feedback Jet….I took a number of shots playing with aperture and shutter speed to get as much detail as I could…..also thanks for the comment on the wedding dress….I am truly blessed with 3 incredible daughters!!
