The one thing that always amazes me about the desert is when you think you understand the terrain you are hiking in, you round a bend or crest a hill and come across an unexpected oasis. I took the attached shots while on a hike in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix.

This first shot gives you an idea of the my initial find, but as I followed the stream around a bend, it became more green and lush (again, the term “lush” is used loosely…it is the desert, so from that point of reference, we’ll stick with “lush”)

My favorites, Kirt , were Oasis 6 and Oasis 7. I enjoy the height and depth displayed in these scenes. The greens sure are lush and do look like an oasis. It makes me think of a few songs, including “Midnight on the Oasis” and “A Horse With No Name.” Music and art pair up in my mind quite frequently.
OK…now you have me singing those songs in my head….where they will stay…I always sing in key in my head, but one it slips out my mouth…not so much:) Thanks for the feedback…it was a pleasant surprise to come across this creek.
I am so fascinated with the desert. The closest I have been to a regular desert is the ‘high desert’ in Nevada. My plans one of these days (or years) is to take a trip to Arizona and New Mexico. Your photos are very nice and I love the actual oasis of water you came across!
It was really a fun find!! I am coming to appreciate the desert more and more as I explore it!
Amazingly beautiful! I will be at Mt. Zion National Park this summer and I am hoping to be able to immerse myself in beauty like this!

It’s not only the desert but it’s the whole state of Arizona. I am often amazed when we go 4 wheelin’ how fast the scenery changes. Within one hour from our house with saguaros in the front yard… I can be somewhere in less then one hour that has tall evergreen trees and much cooler temps.
These pictures are beautiful… I enjoyed the last one #7… The photo is gorgeous but I also noticed the cloud in the right hand corner looks a bit like a heart! Happy Wednesday!
Thanks Nancy! I agree….going just above Payson into the pine trees reminds me of the pines in the mountains along the front range of Colorado! What part of the Phoenix area do you live in? We are way out in the west valley up behind the Estella’s in Goodyear. It’s a little remote, but we like it…takes us about 20 minutes to come down the hill to the 10 fees at. Our friends in the east valley call us half way to Ca!
We are in Anthem. We love it here and I agree with you about Payson feeling like Colorado.

We just did a road trip from the high desert in southern California where we live, across state line, Bullhead City then across to the Grand Canyon, down to Prescott then to Tempe to see the Angels play their last Spring Training game and back home and I have to say, the Arizona desert is an amazing amazing thing. It is nothing that you would imagine a desert to be and everywhere we went had such different characteristics, some were green, some were rocky, some were dry and just totally dead. You captured Phoenix beautifully. I hope to get out that way soon.
We have only lived here for just over a year and I am finding all of what you said to be very true. We lived in San Diego for 24 years and we were familiar with Phoenix and northern Az (flagstaff…Grand Canyon ) but there is so much more!

I know exactly where you mean…our middle daughter lives in Los Feliz area not far from where Los Feliz turns into Franklin…sounds like a story there to be living in such an interesting place???
Yes, it was interesting – right next to the Magic Castle. My Dad is an actor and we lived there my last 2 years of high school. It was interesting – mostly entertainers stayed there. Christopher Walken was a resident at one time.
Love your description and the photos! I have never been to a desert…one of my goals for my life is to travel to the Southwest and see New Mexico and Arizona!
